Your Clothing Choices Can Influence How You Think And Act

The clothes and shoes you wear can influence your mood more than you think. Studies have revealed that how you dress can affect you and how you perceive people and things around you.

Dressing Up Versus Underdressing

Researchers of a study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science asked participants to wear formal business attire and complete a series of experiments that gauged their cognitive processing abilities. Results revealed that those who dressed up felt more powerful and in control compared with their underdressed peers. The study also found that those who dressed in business formal clothing tend to think faster and had more creative ideas.

Red Or Blue?

In another study published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, researchers found how red clothing can affect a person’s likelihood to exercise. They found that people who exercised in red were able to lift heavier weights and tend to have higher average heart rates than those who wear blue. The findings suggest that those in red worked out harder regardless that both groups reported having similar rates of exertion.

Smart Dressing

Another study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology likewise showed that dressing in a clothing that is associated with intelligence such as a pilot’s uniform or a doctor’s coat does not only make a person look smarter. It can also make them act smarter.

In the study, the researchers gave doctor’s lab coat to participants who are not doctors and then asked them to perform a series of complex tasks. The participants who wore white coat committed significantly fewer mistakes compared with those who wore their street clothes.

The researchers repeated the experiment. This time, they gave the lab coat to all the participants but only half of the group were told they wear doctor’s coats. The other half were told they were wearing paint smocks. Those who thought they wear doctor’s coat performed better on the tests suggesting that what you think of what you wear can profoundly influence how you think.
